Thursday's prompt was "Your first day as a pirate". I've noticed with these prompts that most have to do with "You" and "Your" so once again I'm taking some creative license. It's a prompt, so I can. Ha! This one is going to be about a character of mine, Hyde, (kind of my captain hook) and his first day taking over his mother's airship. Enjoy.
Piracy
"I wouldn't call it that," Smullens said for the 20th time.
The young man in the dark blue coat frowned and pushed back thick, dark, hair.
"And why not? It's what my mother called it. And my grandfather before her. It's piracy to steal the light from the stars. Simple as that," Hyde said.
"Because we are legitimate. Technically speaking," Smullens said, wringing his hands.
"We trade in legitimate ports. It does not make what we do legitimate. On a global scale," Hyde said. He seemed perfectly fine with the idea that he was doing illegitimate work and more upset with his new first mate's inability to admit it.
"I...I don't like the word," Smullens admitted.
"Piracy?" Hyde asked.
Smullens nodded, red splotches on his cheeks.
Hyde looked out over the port. His ship was made for both water and air. They had yet to lift off but he was already excited. He'd always loved flying. The world was so broken but the skies felt like opportunity. He leaned back and inhaled deeply.
"Well, I like it. Feels like...possibility," he said.
Smullens trembled.
"Say whatever you're thinking, Smullens. You know how I hate that," Hyde said absently. He was watching the clouds move above him.
"Can we not sell it that way?" Smullens asked.
Hyde laughed. "Of course we won't. Not everyone likes a life of adventure. And I will not take that safety net from them. Now. Let's go. It's time to take to the skies. The stars are coming out and I want to catch every drop of light, don't you?"
Smullens looked up in the dimming light. The new captain was laughing and he smiled back. Their first day of piracy as a team. He nodded.
"Yes, sir."
