This prompt leaves me with an open world. "I was not sorry." That's it. It's blank slate. So let's see where it takes us.
I Was Not Sorry
There are many things I've said sorry for. Broken dishes. Promises I didn't keep. Lies I told that I got caught in. But for this? I was not sorry. I would not, could not, be sorry. I stared back in defiance at the baleful eyes. No. I would not say it. I did have a tendency to say sorry when I didn't mean it. I was good at placating, not good at fighting back. But I had decided to take a stand. I. Was. Not. Sorry.
Her blue eyes pleaded with me but I only shook my head. I would not yield. I was a mighty tree. A mountain that could not bend. Her lower lip began to quiver. I stayed my ground. Tears began to fill her eyes. Still, I would not break. When her single tooth began to show I had to turn away. There was only so much I could stand. Her cries yanked on heart but I didn't say a word.
"Mama?" she warbled.
I turned to face her once more, the crumbs a sign of my guilt on my chin.
"I'm not sorry," I said. She began to cry.
